Program and Presentation of the ridersDuring one and a half days, Bent Branderup will teach these horse-and-rider pairs in the Academic Art of Riding, both from the ground and in the saddle.
Each participant will work on what they personally need, and as a spectator, you are warmly invited to take part in this journey of knowledge and inspiration. There will be room for your questions, and Bent will also hold theory sessions. Below, you can meet most of the participating pairs and get to know them a little better. Welcome! |

1. Rider: Sweden
Hanna Engström from Sweden – Gotlands Riding Academy. I have enjoyed the Academic Art of Riding together with the community and Bent since the turn of the millennium! Throughout the years, I’ve studied this art with my horses and come to truly appreciate the wonderful pedagogical structure and progressive system that Academic Riding offers for the horse. I love sharing this soft and thoughtful form of dressage with others and their horses, so that the understanding of biomechanics can truly benefit the horse’s well-being. That’s what I’ve been dedicated to for the past 20 years. This weekend, I’d like to take a closer look at my younger horse, who is currently learning the foundational elements — Opal de Fuego, a 7-year-old PRE gelding. |

Jessica Kempter, Attached you´ll find a photo of my horse Ramira and me, she is an 11 year old Quarab mare. She´s been with me since she was about three years old. She was first trained as a western horse. Over time we had more and more problems riding in the arena. Hacking out was wonderful, but as soon as we reached the arena, she was unwilling and did not want to move in any way. So I stopped riding her completely for about 2 years. I met Dörte about two years ago during a clinic wich she held. I had signed up as some kind of "last chance" not for me and Ramira, but for riding her in general. I was happy spending time with her apart from riding. I love her and we always had a great connection, but I was just tired of trying to make her do anything, while she simply said "no" to it. Trainers had told me, that she was simply lazy and would just need "a harder correction" wish just did not fit with me. I rode at that clinic with Dörte for the first time after about two years and it just clicked. We had so much fun working together and continued that path from then on. We are pretty new when it comes to the AR but we are always passionate to learn more. She has some physical issues, that we are working on everyday, but the AR helped us both a lot in understanding healthy movements and keeping her mobile and happy. |

3. Rider: United Kingdom
My name is Jacquie Billington and I live in South West UK. I have been enjoying the Academic Adventure with my horses for about 10 years now and I continue to remain curious about the nuances and subtleties within AAoR. I passed my AAoR Squire Test in 2023. The horses I have chosen for Bents Clinic 1st 2nd November are Fiona and Uralita, who are are both PRE mares. Fionas Photo shows me wearing a white shirt and grey waistcoat. Uralitas photo shows me wearing a wool coat and a riding hat. Fiona is 16 years old and was bred in UK. She has lived with me since she was 2 years old and I bought her from her breeder. I started her myself, and long before she was ridden, it was clear that she was a naturally hot, excitable high fizzy energy kind of horse, who is very sensitive. She settles better on a hack out, so much of her training has been while out hacking and at first I could not train her much in the arena because she was too nervous, though nothing bad has ever happened to her in the arena and nobody else has ever ridden her . I have found she focuses better if I use some cones to ride around and I would like to work on her ability to go from the more collected work which excites her, back to more forwards work. I totally adore her. Uralita is my Squire Test horse, who was given to me to work with when she was a 6 year old in foal mare. She was imported to UK from her Spanish breeder by her new British owner, but was found to be untouchable when she arrived, so her owner was worried about how a Vet could approach her for foaling if she had a problem and asked me to help him. I caught her by trapping her in a field shelter and I lead her on the roads to my home, as she would not load. I worked only on helping her overcome her deep fear of humans and she foaled safely at my home. |
The foal was slowly weaned and went to live with his owner and I did not ride her until she was nearly 8 years old because she was busy with her foal. Uralita was then given half to me, and later I bought the other half ownership and she became mine. She is a very sharp highly intelligent and intense mare, with a slippery snake body and a beautiful heart. I can hardly believe that she is now 20 years old and I am currently working towards her Bending of the Haunches Test.

4. Rider: Norway
Søssa Jørgensen, I live on a small farm in south eastern Norway with my four horses. Two Welsh Cobs, a Norwegian Coldblood Trotter and a Lyngen horse, a smaller workinghorse of Nordic type. I have always been interested in horses, and during my life I have tried out how to ride and be among horses in different ways. A good while ago I decided that Academic Art of Riding was the way of riding I wanted to explore more, and including groundwork, this is still true. I experience that academic teaching manages to put words on what happens between the human and the horse on the ground, and in the horse between the rider´s hand and the seat. I have always carried a wish to become a better rider, but along the way I have understood that studying the whole horse, the overall health and the way they need to live are important parts of the pussle. |
My mentors nowadays are Hanna Engström and Celina Skogan, they are guiding me to unveil the secrets of riding, and other questions around horses.
I am also a part of a AR-comunity in my area, wich is important. I have also had the opprotunity to ride for Bent Branderup both online and live here in Norway. |

6. Rider: Norway
My name is Karoline Kjesrud and this horse, Madonna, came to me two years ago, after years in the show jumping scene. We have spend time together recovering physical and mental traumas, and developing a way of communication founded on trust and mutual understanding. We are working on the basics of the academic art of riding, experimenting with how communicating in, through and about movement generate confidence, strength and trust. |

8. Rider: South Africa
Jenny Vogel I am based in Noordhoek Cape Town with my horses. It is now 10 years I have lived on the tip of the African continent. I teach regularly and I must say it’s a joy seeing riders and their horses developing together. It really shows me that it doesn’t matter which horse you have or how talented you are. Everyone can learn with the right mindset. I also like learning and it’s my responsibility as a teacher. Therefore I always look forward to the online clinic with Bent. He is a great teacher. Thank you Hanna for once again organising this event. I was just gifted a horse - Shadowfax. 13 years old. I don’t know so much about his background other than he has been lightly ridden for two years and he has been rehabilitated living outside in a herd of other horses. He is a Warmblood/Lusitano cross. I will slowly introducer him to the Academic of Riding. If he is ok I will take this opportunity to get some feedback from Bent. If he isn’t ready then I will either take my old boy Campitor or my mare Nana. |

9. Rider: USA
Meg Brauch has been a squire in the Knighthood of the Academic Art of Riding since 2023. She proudly represents this work here in the US and is humbled to be a part of such a wonderful community of people dedicated to the well being of both horse and human. She runs a small boarding and training operation in Ashford, CT USA. Meg enjoys working with all breeds of horses and strives to help improve the relationships between horse and human. She has a particular love for developing subtleties in body awareness as well as for helping horses become more relaxed and confident in both their environment and their work. For this clinic I will be working with Imperador, a 10 year old Lusitano who has been with me since he was 4 years old. He continues to progress nicely in the academic work as we work towards our goals of improving collection and bending of the haunches. He is a kind and sensitive horse and I primarily work him bitless and bridleless these days. I may also do a lesson with Renfrew, my 13 year old Hanoverian who is my horse that I did both my groundwork and lunge test as well as my ridden squire test on. Renfrew had a serious case of laminitis and founder last spring of 2024 and is just returning to ridden work. He has taken me on a journey towards trimming my own horses and diving deeper into some of my care and husbandry practices as well as my pursuit of training and academic work. |

10. Rider: United Kingdom
Hi, my name is Leonie and this is my wonder-Arab Ischia (Ischy for short). I’ve owned Ischy for 9 years and what an eventful time it has been!! He came to me a fairly green ten year old and it took me two weeks to even be able to catch him from the field! We have worked our way through various training programmes before settling on Academic Art of Riding and we both absolutely love the training process. Ischy thrives at liberty work and we are currently working towards our groundwork and lunge test. We are currently working hard on our shoulder in because I apparently enjoy standing on the wrong side and Ischy is incredibly hypermobile which can lead to some interesting shapes from both of us. I can’t wait to see where this process takes us as I have already seen a huge improvement both physically and mentally from Ischy. |
